Esports Events 2020 Calendar: Call Of Duty, CS:GO, Dota 2, Fortnite, League Of Legends, And Overwatch

Esports took more strides in 2019. We saw the emergence of brand new esports events like the Fortnite World Cup come into the top tier. And we witnessed some of the biggest esports tournaments like the League of Legends World Championship and The International attract attention from all walks of life. Now that it’s 2020, below are all of the esports events for Call of Duty, CS:GO, Dota 2, Fortnite, League of Legends, and Overwatch.

Call of Duty

The final esport title that we will be taking a look at for 2020 is Call of Duty. It’s another esport that has moved away from the classic tournament style of play and into the franchised model of esports. The Call of Duty League is gearing up for its first-ever event under the new game, Modern Warfare. The first event is slated to be held in Minnesota from January 24-26 with all 12 teams attending. The rest of the year will feature home events by every team, with the tournament style of matches at each event.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO)

CS:GO reached new heights in 2019, with countless events throughout the year and the Valve-sponsored Major events that are seen as the pinnacle of CS:GO. The next Major is coming up soon in fact. This time it will be hosted by Brazil.

Dota 2

Dota 2 plays host to The International every year around the end of summer. With a similar concept to League of Legends, Dota 2 is popular around the world and The International is known for pulling excellent viewership numbers as well. What really sets The International apart from other esports titles is the prize pool. Every year they open up the prize pool to crowd-funding. Fans can purchase items from the Steam store, and a portion of the sales go towards the prize pool of The International. We have seen the prize pool exceed 30 million, so don't be surprised if it once again breaks that mark this year.

Fortnite

Fortnite experienced its breakthrough year in esports this past year. With Epic Games known to not host as many LANs as other esports titles, the two more prominent ones were the Secret Skirmish and of course, the Fortnite World Cup in 2019. The latter had the second largest prize pool ($30 million) of any esports event in 2019. The world watched as 16-year-old Bugha took home the $3 million prize for the Solos portion of the event. With no official confirmation of a Fortnite World Cup for this upcoming year, we can assume there will be another one sometime during the summer along with qualifications starting mid-April 2020.

• Fortnite Champion Series (FNCS): Potentially in a few weeks or during the next Fortnite season
• Fortnite Australian Open: February 1, 2020
• Weekly Cash Cups once or twice a week going on during the course of a season as well

League of Legends

Perhaps the world’s biggest esport is played in multiple regions across the world with varying leagues set up in dominant regions such as North America, Europe, and Korea. Some of these regions like North America and Europe have already transitioned to a franchised model while regions such as Korea still feature standard matches with chances of promotion and relegation.

Regardless of that, League of Legends uses the same format for all of its regions. Teams will play in a Spring Split until late March, which will conclude with its region finals. The winner of each region will book a ticket to MSI (Mid-Season Invitational) where the best teams in the world will duke it out for the crown at the halfway point of the season.

After MSI, teams will play in the Summer Split, eyeing a spot at League of Legends Worlds, which is always the concluding event of the year.

League of Legends Leagues and Start Dates:

We can only detail when the Spring seasons of these regions will commence, as the details for the Summer seasons have not been announced yet. It is also unknown where and when MSI 2020 and the World Championships will be held, but we will update this list when they do get announced!

Overwatch

Overwatch launched the world’s first global franchise league. The league has introduced multiple teams as of late, and this is the first year when all teams will not be playing their matches at the former venue in Burbank, California. This year’s Overwatch League will introduce local events, much like the Call of Duty League which we will detail later. Teams across the world will host weekend events with multiple teams in attendance.
